JCDO Representatives to Participate in Cosmos in the Desert
Aug 11, 2025

Cosmos in the Desert has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday night, Aug. 16 near Silver Springs.
Life is full of second chances, and the Nevada Division of State Parks and the Division of Outdoor Recreation is providing one with the rescheduling of the Cosmos in the Desert event on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Lahontan State Recreation Area’s Beach No. 3.
Jack C. Davis Observatory representatives, including Dr. Thomas Herring, and volunteers from the Western Nevada Astronomical Society will provide assistance for the event, which starts at 8 p.m.
This one-of-a-kind evening celebrates Nevada’s dark skies through guided exploration, storytelling and hands-on activities for all ages.
“We will have a few telescopes for viewing, and I'm presenting a ‘night sky tour,’ pointing out constellations and some notable mashed eye things in the sky,” Dr. Herring said.
The event also includes an astrophotography demonstration, virtual reality night sky experience, nocturnal wildlife walk, food trucks and more. The cost is $5 (parking) for Nevada residents and $10 for nonresidents.
