24th TRTER Trail Runs Marked by Close Finish, Cooler Temps

Jul 20, 2025

Cooler temperatures than normal and one of the tightest races in the history of the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Races (TRTER) highlighted the 24th event hosted by Western Nevada College on Saturday, July 19.

It was a very smooth day from a director's perspective,” said TRTER Race Director George Ruiz. “The runners enjoyed the course and the temperatures were not as hot as the previous two years.”

While the temperatures climbed into the 90s later in the day, participants were treated to the low 60s when the 14-mile and 50-kilometer races started at 7 a.m. Participants started at John L. Harvey Field John L. Harvey Field and accessed the course trails through Ash Canyon before eventually returning to the baseball field at WNC.

The debut of the 14-mile race — prompted by the cancelation of the 100- and 50-mile events because of construction projects in the Sierra backcountry — provided the most drama. Reno’s Michael Arciniega outlasted fellow Renoite Tyler Shanks by .11 of a second. The winner was timed in 2 hours, 1 minute and 40 seconds.

“They are training buddies,” Ruiz said. “Apparently, they battled the whole way like that. They said they also train with Ben Tedore from Reno who has won everything he's raced here. They're fast if they run with Ben.”

Isabel Diaz of San Rafael, Calif., won the women’s title, placing sixth overall with a time of 2:21:59.

The 14-miler attracted competitors from as far away as Philadelphia; Lewisburg, Penn.; Cincinnati; Bloomfield, N.J.; Tampa, Fla; St. Louis; and Dallas.

Among the top local finishers were Whit Rambach of Incline Village, ninth, 2:24:37; Raymond Hurley, Dayton, 11th, 2:33:37; and Cameron Carr of Dayton, 12th, 2:35:11. Also finishing inside the top 20 were EJ Maldonado of Carson City, 14th; 2:41:45; and Chloe Hataway of Carson City, 19th, 2:53:44. Other local finishers included Jason Hataway of Carson City, 24th, 3:00:32; Kelly Nicholas of Carson City, 32nd, 3:11:34; Kira Brooks of Carson City, 58th, 3:42:18; and Dave Lampert of Minden, 83rd, 4:41:02.

More than 125 runners opted for the longer 50K distance, requiring competitors to run just over 31 miles. Chris Barber of Reno won the 50K in 4 hours, 59 minutes and 51 seconds. The only change to the regular 50K course was the elimination of the Marlette Peak loop. They departed John L. Harvey Field, then followed Ash Canyon Road to Snow Valley Peak, before taking the Tahoe Rim Trail to Laxalt Junction. After proceeding to Capital 2 Tahoe Trail to Waterfall Aid Station, they galloped toward home base at WNC.

Lindsey Knast of Lafayette, Colo., outdueled Jamie Noriega of Folsom, Calif., for the women’s title. Knast was fourth overall in 5:17:07, with Noriega not far behind in sixth at 5:30:22.

Tony Moore was the top Carson City runner in 48th place, with a finishing time of 7:24:32. Minden’s Todd Cadwell placed 87th in 8:39:45, followed by Jeff Medrano of Carson City, 88th, 8:44:17; Cody Johnson of Carson City, 97th, 9:00:48; Gina Session of Carson City, 98th, 9:01:12; and Ben Ellis of Fallon, 109th, 9:47:32.
